  • I quick look at the ctwug (Cape Town Wireless User Group) home page shows me that they have 1450 active interconnected nodes. It does not provide internet and the nodes are private, but i would argue that that is bigger that TshwiFi (terrible name) 776 wifi zones.

    Best of all is that ctwug and the wugs in other cities are all user contributed and costs a lot less than R100 million to operate.

    We definitely need to catch up with goings on at the different WUGs. It's been a while since we looked at them. I wonder if now that there's the big push for free WiFi, the municipalities should be actively courting them to help extend the reach (by allowing then to offer internet access?). If they can - the mobile operators would no doubt object...
